Amalia, Gilbert and their children

Our Hero
By: Amalia Garcia

My children and I lost our hero, Gilbert Garcia, when he passed due to suicide on February 19, 2021. Gilbert had the bravest heart I have ever known and motivation like no other. He was the best father he could be, and our kids loved all his goofy moments. His laughter was so big you could feel the rumble in your bones.

Gilbert was the first in his family to join the military and was known to get bored easily. He hated feeling stagnant and loved a challenge, so he applied for Special Forces and completed the course. He served two tours to Afghanistan and one to Iraq and each one took a toll on him.

We miss him every day. I live every day for him. And I know every day that goes by is a day closer to him.

I was referred to the Grief & Loss Center by the school counselor. My children attend Same As Me (SAM’s), and I attend the Spouse/Partner Loss group. The Center has welcomed us and allowed us to share our loss without feeling any judgment.

Suicide is not an easy topic - even family members tend to avoid talking about it. I love the feeling of being treated like any other person in our group. The group allows me to speak freely and openly about suicide. Laurie and the volunteers make the Center feel so welcoming and you can immediately feel their sincerity. I have always and will continue to refer the Center to anyone who has lost a loved one.
